The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
