"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several celebrated fans have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals frequently depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to start a band."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

However Haim will always be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
