An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.

One account, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
