Administration Reveals Federal Employee Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
